Demand for Bajaj Auto's Chetak electric scooter continues to outpace current production capacity, and the company plans to raise monthly production to around 80,000 units by the end of March, according to a senior company official.
Speaking to reporters after announcing the company's July-September quarter results, Joint Managing Director Rakesh Sharma said the automaker has restored production to full existing capacity after supply chain disruptions recently hit its output.
"However, the requirement is more than this...I think by fourth quarter, which is the January-March quarter, is when we hope to de-bottleneck and reach something like 80,000 units. That will be closer to what our current requirement is," Sharma said.
According to him, Bajaj Auto has electric two-wheeler production capacity of around 60,000 units but recently manufactured only 40,000 units due to a supply chain issue. This resulted in production loss of 20,000 units despite robust demand.
Bajaj Auto said Chetak volumes more than doubled in the July-September quarter, with segment revenue crossing ₹2,000 crore.
He also noted that electric vehicles no longer reduce the company's margins, as they have become margin accretive, with Chetak moving from loss to double-digit profitability. "Chetak has now become double digit profitability and three wheelers have always been double digit and they have improved...The more we sell EVs, we are making money," Sharma said.
Meanwhile, Bajaj Auto is also looking at multiple locations for a new manufacturing plant for EV and ICE capacity. Sharma said the company is in discussions with a few states as it assesses potential sites for its sixth plant.
"Not just Chetak, but also for premium products and high-end bikes, we are finding the capacity is getting challenged," he said.
Sharma had earlier said the automaker plans to ramp up its annual manufacturing capacity by more than 25 per cent, from around 7 million units to more than 9 million units, in the medium term to meet rising demand for electric vehicles, premium motorcycles, and exports.
